Google provides backlink tool for site owners

Google provides backlink tool for site owners

One of the common requests I hear from webmasters is “Why doesn’t Google show me most or all of my backlinks?” Well, as of today, Google’s webmaster console will now let you see your site’s backlinks. Major props to the webmaster console team for this new feature. A few things to know:

  • The backlink tool doesn’t show 100% of the backlinks from Google yet, but I expect the number of links that are available to grow.

  • In particular, for my site I was easily able to see more than 10x more links in this new tool than the link: command gave me. The link: command has always returned a small fraction of the backlinks that Google knows about, mainly for historical reasons (e.g. limited disk space on the machines that served up “link:” data).

  • You can download the backlinks in a really nice CSV format, suitable for slicing and dicing and other analysis. I believe you can export up to a million backlinks if your site has that many backlinks.

  • Do not assume just because you see a backlink that it’s carrying weight. I’m going to say that again: Do not assume just because you see a backlink that it’s carrying weight. Sometime in the next year, someone will say “But I saw an insert-link-fad-here backlink show up in Google’s backlink tool, so it must count. Right?” And then I’ll point them back here, where I say do not assume just because you see a backlink that it’s carrying weight

I’m sure that there was more that I wanted to say, but why don’t people start playing with it and give feedback or post backlink tool-related questions? I know that the webmaster team reads to get feedback over here too; congrats again to that entire team for providing this. If you want to start browsing your site’s backlinks, sign up for Google’s webmaster console now.

Latent Semantic Analysis Gathering Titles

In order to give an example of Latent Sematic Analysis, I went to Amazon.com, searched on "investing", and took the top 10 books titles that were displayed. One of those book titles only had one index word so I dropped it. Here are the other 9 titles with the index words underlined. To be an index word, the word must occur in 2 or more titles, and not be a "noise" or stop word such as "the", "to", "of", etc.

Latent Semantic Analysis

Latent Semantic Analysis Tutorial

Latent Sematic Analysis or LSA is a way of finding patterns among a collection of documents such as web pages. It is increasingly used by major search engines, such as Google, in ranking websites and determining what AdSense ads to show on a page.

To see how Latent Semantic Analysis works, imagine that you have a collection of documents such as web pages, or in the simple example we show below, book titles. How would you go about finding similarities and differences between the documents?

The Basic Idea

One way is to form a large matrix with each column representing a document, and each row representing a word that has been extracted from the documents. Then, each cell of the matrix is simply the number of times that word appears in that document. For example, if the word "farm" appears in the first document 7 times, then that cell would have a 7 in it. Each cell is simply a count of the number of times that word appears in that document.

The cell numbers are usually massaged, so that whatever patterns are present can be seen more clearly. This step corresponds to "cleaning the data" so that, for example, frequent words are not weighted too heavily, some natural language constructs are simplified, and long documents don't have an unfair advantage. Some ways that cell numbers are massaged are:

  • Log of Counts - the log of the counts in each cell may be used instead of the actual counts.
  • Stemming - related words may have the same root word and should be considered the same (such as golf and golfing).
  • TF-IDF - (term frequency - inverse document frequency) attempts to measure the importance of a term or word.
  • Entropy - another way to measure term importance based on the distribution of the term through documents.
  • Normalization - sets each document vector to length 1 so documents with more words don't have an unfair advantage.

Benefits of Social Book marking

There are a lot of similarities and differences between SEO & SMO. Because of this, and the idea that one cannot take over the role for the other, it is important to know when and why to use each optimization technique.

Social bookmarks help you to share your favorite website links with your friends at the entire Internet world. This is the way, you can make other people familiar with your business and this is the way, to bring more traffic to your website. If you are an ambitious internet marketer and businessman, you need traffic, and social bookmarking, sharing with friends and requesting them to vote your story i is a great way to acquire it. Each and every link you submit to the social bookmarking sites for free can drive more visitors to your website.

Social bookmarking tools could be used to submit your web pages of your website within a short period of time. Among free social bookmarking tools I have found socialmarker as useful tool for bloggers. As you will start submitting your web pages or articles to the bookmarking sites, you will see that within a few days, your website will start climbing the results pages in the most popular search engines, such as Google, Altavista and Yahoo

Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata.

In social bookmarking websites, users create and store bookmarks of their choice. These bookmarks can be viewed by others and that let them know about new services and latest concepts which are making news in the online world.

Benefits of Social Book marking:

  • Earn Google indexed back links for your web Sites
  • Helpful links can be provided to the readers of libraries through social book marking.
  • You can make vast publication in an easy way.
  • Can turn heavy traffic toward your web Site.
  • Provides good prospect for internet associate marketing. If you make it to build up a wide-ranging personal network of people, probability of improved sale of your product/service increases.
  • Social book marking outcome in generating millions of page views on monthly basis. It attracts the visitors from all over the world, thus the internet marketers use this web traffic to get the target customers.
  • Assimilation bookmarks from many computers, association of bookmarks, sharing of bookmarks with friends and so on.
  • System offers the capability to rank a particular resource on the basis of number of times it has been bookmarked by the users.
  • Fast Indexing: Google bot is indexing these community web sites very quickly, for example, digg, stumble and technotary stories are indexed every 20 to 25 minutes, so when you get the web site submitted in these social sites and they remainder on home page or inner category page, they get indexed very fast!

Gmail Can Now Tell Which Of Your Contacts Are Awake

Gmail Labs continues to make an awesome product even better. Tonight the site has introduced ‘Sender time zone’, a feature that allows users to quickly tell if their contact is likely awake or sound asleep, based on the time zone their Emails are being sent from.

The feature takes advantage of the time zone data often included in Email headers, showing a green light for contacts that are probably awake and a red one for those that are asleep.

For those of us who live and die by our inboxes, it can be tough to keep track of the contacts that are abroad, which can lead to some awkward phone calls (I’ve accidentally called CEOs of startups located in the UK at around 4 in the morning, their time). The feature is also helpful for determining how quickly you can expect an Emailed response from your contact (again, I’ve sent urgent messages to PR representatives who were based abroad).

As with all Google Labs features (other notables include a Panic Button and Multi-Pane Viewing) users can access the feature by enabling Google Labs through their Gmail settings, then selecting ‘Sender Time Zone’.
