Learning from Google Webmaster Tools Caffeine Data

Learning from Google Webmaster Tools Caffeine Data

Some of you may have noticed that your link counts in Google Webmaster Tools have increased somewhat recently, we are seeing amazing numbers up to 1000 times higher than previous figures.

The reason for this is very interesting, following the roll out of the new Caffeine infrastructure Google is able to spider sites far deeper than before and they are now reporting this increased activity in Webmaster Tools. You can see this by looking at your internal links -- if you have 50,000 internal links to your homepage then it’s a fair assumption you have 10,000 pages on your site. This number is probably a lot higher than it was last month.

When you take into account the increase in internal links being reported it’s quite clear why Google is now reporting on a lot more external links too, especially when you think about sitewide links.

This number is here to stay according to Google:
Yes, we revamped the data behind the backlinks feature in Webmaster Tools -- it has started using more data from “Caffeine” for some sites and is planned to continue with a bit more data in the next week or so. The goal is to have more fresher & up-to-date data there .
Another very interesting piece of data we are seeing is that although Google is reporting a lot more pages within Webmaster Tools the number of pages indexed by the site: query on Google has dropped for quite a few sites we monitor. This drop appears to be the result of Google being better able to determine which pages are worth displaying in the index.

Our observations can be summed up as follows:
  • Google is spidering big sites a lot more than before – both in terms of volume of pages and frequency
  • Google is much better at deciding which pages are worth showing in the index
  • A lot of pages that are spidered are not being indexed if they are low value (see Mayday update)
  • Pages that previously were indexed but not ranking are now not indexed (but still being spidered)

Looking deeper

One of the main impacts this has had on SEO is that the way people audit websites is now pretty much invalid. In the past people would do a site: query on Google to look through all the indexed pages and find errors and problems from there. This is not accurate anymore because Google is not allowing low alue pages to get into the index as much.

We downloaded all our clients internal links (Google lets you have up to around 100MB) and found (using Excel) that there were quite a few rogue pages that were being spidered and counted as internal links but not indexed – these pages were wasting PageRank and diluting the impact of the good pages. We would never have spotted these pages by looking at indexed pages alone.

Google Vs. Bing and Yahoo

New webmaster tools strategy and a partnership with Yahoo will make Bing more significant.

Will Bing SEO be as important as Google SEO? has been the hot debate ever since Bing was launched. Soon Yahoo and Bing will come together forcing on-line marketers to take Bing more seriously in SEO positioning.

At the SMX Advanced conference Janet Driscoll Miller of Search Mojo spoke on this topic. Her main point is that some businesses are already seeing better results from Bing than they do Google, eventually Yahoo will start using Bing for searches, this will see Bing’s share of the search market grow dramatically. If you think Bing is already powering facebook searches it really does become unmissable.

Bing has now added a tool in its Webmaster tools that you lets you see the types of links that point to you. You can actually see the value of each link letting you judge its worth and this will help you to go after similar links.

We all know that Bing’s Webmaster tools have not exactly been great since its inception but they are undergoing a redesign. The new tools will provide webmasters with a simplified, more intuitive user experience that provides a comprehensive view of how Bing indexes their sites.

Google is the leading search engine used by on-line marketers and SEO companies to promote products due to its easy to use and accessible Webmaster Tools. The Bing search engine is now no longer insignificant, once Bing has teamed up with Yahoo and launched its new Webmaster tools it is going to factor into the working of all SEO businesses.

New Update in Google Webmaster Tools

New Update in Google Webmaster Tools: Submit URL Parameters to Ignore

A good initiative by Google, allowing the webmasters to let the Googlebot know which URL parameters to ignore while crawling or indexing the site web pages.

  1. Log in to your Google Webmaster tools account

  2. Click on the ‘Site Configuration’ link on the left and then on ‘Settings’

  3. At the bottom you will find ‘Parameter Handling’ to adjust the parameter settings.

Dynamic parameters (for example, session IDs, source, or language) in your URLs can result in many different URLs all pointing to essentially the same content. For example: http://www.example.com/product?pid=123 might point to the same content as http://www.example.com/product. You can specify whether you want Google to ignore up to 15 specific parameters in your URL.

Also, Google lists the parameters they have identified in the URLs of your site and suggests if the parameters are vague for them. You can confirm your choice to ignore or not to ignore. You can also add parameters that Googlebot was unable to identify and list them.

The reasons why I find this useful are:

  1. This will really help Google in identifying the duplicate content pages and help them in proper indexing with fewer duplicate URLs.

  2. This can result in more efficient crawling of Googlebot.

  3. Googlebot can crawl more pages and index them, as the crawler efficiency is increased.

  4. This can reduce the PageRank dilution as external website may be linking to various versions of your URLs and this will help Google understand that all these pages are same. Thus, providing the proper PageRank credit to the page.

  5. Simple way to indicate the parameters to ignore or consider, instead of using the canonical option.

Google Webmaster New Look

Google Webmaster New Look

Google Webmaster Tools began as a way for webmasters to submit Sitemaps. Over the years they have constantly been adding and updating new features. The result was a set of tools we're pretty proud of--but also a site that had become pretty unwieldy and often difficult to navigate.

That's why we decided to redesign Webmaster Tools from the ground up. We wanted a logically organized suite of features, and a cleaner, faster interface. So we talked to webmasters. We conducted user studies. We analyzed a lot of data.

The result is a simpler, more intuitive navigation. Features are now grouped together in three categories: Site configuration (where you provide Google with information about your site), Your site on the web (where you can view Google data about your site), and Diagnostics

(where you can get reports on any problems we encountered crawling your site). Our goal was to make stats and data more discoverable, while removing redundant pages and features (such as Index stats) that cluttered the interface and reproduced information available elsewhere.

If you can't find a feature in the new interface, check the table below.
